An Unforgettable Excursion in Marseille: My Time as a Crew Member on the Coral Cruise Ship

As a crew member aboard the Coral cruise ship, I had the privilege of visiting some of the most stunning destinations in the Mediterranean, and one of the most memorable stops was in Marseille, France. From the moment we docked in the bustling Port of Marseille, the city’s blend of ancient history, vibrant culture, and stunning Mediterranean views left me in awe. Here’s a glimpse of the incredible excursion I experienced while on this magnificent voyage.

A Day in Marseille: The Gateway to Provence

Marseille, the second-largest city in France, is a lively and eclectic port city with a fascinating mix of history, modernity, and maritime charm. As a crew member, I didn’t have the luxury of a vacationer’s schedule, but that didn’t stop me from soaking in all the beauty the city had to offer. Our excursion started bright and early, with the sun rising over the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean, casting a golden glow on the iconic Notre-Dame de la Garde, perched high above the city.

1. Exploring the Old Port (Vieux-Port)

We began our excursion by walking through the heart of Marseille—its historic Old Port (Vieux-Port). The port has been the city’s lifeblood for centuries, and it’s easy to see why. The hustle and bustle of fishing boats, luxury yachts, and ferries gave it a lively atmosphere. As I walked along the waterfront, I could feel the blend of history and modern-day Marseille: locals gathering at cafes, fishermen selling their catch of the day, and tourists snapping photos of the glistening water and colorful boats.

We took a few moments to admire the beautiful Fort Saint-Nicolas and Fort Saint-Jean, both of which guard the harbor entrance. The panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the city’s skyline were incredible. It was easy to get lost in the charm of the Old Port, and I spent some time simply watching the world go by.

2. Notre-Dame de la Garde: A Majestic Viewpoint

The next stop on our itinerary was the iconic Notre-Dame de la Garde, a basilica that sits atop a hill, offering sweeping views of the entire city and the coast. As a crew member, I had the opportunity to visit this historical gem on my own time and was blown away by its beauty.

The church itself is an architectural marvel, with stunning mosaics and a gold statue of the Virgin Mary on top. But what truly took my breath away was the view. From here, you could see the entire city stretching out beneath you, with the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean surrounding the coastline. The church holds a special place in the hearts of locals, who often make pilgrimages to it for protection, guidance, and blessings.

3. The Vibrancy of Le Panier District

A short stroll from the Old Port took us to Le Panier, Marseille’s oldest neighborhood. Here, cobblestone streets wind their way through colorful, narrow alleys lined with vibrant murals, boutiques, and cafes. Le Panier has a bohemian vibe, and every corner felt like it was brimming with art and history. It was clear that this district, once an area of poverty, has experienced a revival in recent years and has become a hotspot for locals and tourists alike.

We stopped by a quaint café to sip espresso, surrounded by locals chatting in French, the smell of fresh croissants in the air. I had the chance to try panisse, a local chickpea fritter snack, which was the perfect treat to energize us for the rest of our adventure.

4. A Taste of Marseille: Seafood and Local Delights

No visit to Marseille would be complete without indulging in its famous cuisine, especially seafood. The city is known for its bouillabaisse, a rich and flavorful fish stew. We made our way to a restaurant overlooking the port and tucked into a steaming bowl of this iconic dish. The fish was fresh, and the broth was rich with flavors from saffron, garlic, and herbs. As I savored each bite, I couldn’t help but feel so fortunate to be experiencing Marseille from a crew member’s perspective—away from the crowds, but still fully immersed in the city’s essence.

5. Calanques National Park: Nature’s Masterpiece

In the afternoon, we set off on a boat tour to explore the stunning Calanques National Park, one of the most beautiful natural spots in the region. The Calanques are a series of limestone cliffs and deep inlets along the Mediterranean coastline, known for their crystal-clear waters and dramatic landscapes.

Cruising along the coastline was like floating through a postcard. We passed secluded coves where the water was so blue it seemed surreal, and cliffs that rose majestically from the sea. Some of the Calanques are only accessible by boat or on foot, and we got a chance to swim in the serene waters of one of these secluded coves. I couldn’t help but dive in, the cool water providing a refreshing break from the heat of the day.

6. Shopping and Souvenirs

As our excursion came to an end, we made our way back to the port, but not without a stop at one of Marseille’s many open-air markets. Les Halles de la Major offered a fantastic selection of local goods, from soaps made with lavender and olive oil to Marseille’s famous herbes de Provence. I picked up a few trinkets for friends and family back home—souvenirs that captured the essence of this beautiful city.

Conclusion: Marseille, A City Like No Other

Marseille, with its rich history, stunning natural beauty, and dynamic culture, was a highlight of my time aboard the Coral. As a crew member, I had a unique opportunity to explore the city from a different perspective, diving into its vibrant life without the typical tourist hustle and bustle. Every corner I turned, every street I wandered, revealed something new and unexpected.

From the Old Port’s lively atmosphere to the quiet beauty of the Calanques, Marseille’s charm is undeniable. It’s a city of contrasts, where the old meets the new, where the sea meets the land, and where you can find a sense of belonging no matter where you’re from.

If you ever find yourself on a cruise ship docking in Marseille, I highly recommend taking the time to explore this fascinating city. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, Marseille is sure to leave an impression.

Until next time, I’ll be reminiscing about the views, the flavors, and the unforgettable moments of my Marseille adventure.

P.S. If you’re planning to visit Marseille as a tourist, don’t forget to pack comfortable shoes for all the walking through the cobblestone streets of Le Panier and bring a camera to capture the stunning landscapes along the coast!
